Specialization and ABA Recognition: In the 1960s, the ABA began recognizing various areas of legal specialization. The goal was to encourage lawyers to specialize and prove their proficiency in certain areas, like family law, criminal law, tax law, or civil trial law. To become board-certified, lawyers had to meet stringent requirements, including a combination of education, experience, peer reviews, and examinations.
